About
Guru Shrimathi Sivanuja Balaji is a distinguished Bharatanatyam artist, choreographer, Nattuvanar, artistic curator, and educator with over 30 years of experience in Indian classical dance, rooted in the Kalakshetra Bani.
Biography
Guru Shrimathi Sivanuja Balaji is a classically trained Bharatanatyam artist, teacher, and performer rooted in the Kalakshetra Bani — a tradition shaped by the artistic vision and legacy of Rukmini Devi Arundale.
Her artistic journey has been shaped by dedicated training, performance, and a deep engagement with Indian classical dance. Alongside Bharatanatyam, her artistic vocabulary extends across Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, Contemporary Fusion, and Theatre Performance, allowing her to explore the many dimensions of movement, expression, rhythm, and storytelling.
Over the years, Sivanuja has brought Bharatanatyam to diverse audiences through performances, collaborations, teaching, and artistic projects. Her work reflects a balance between discipline and creativity, tradition and contemporary expression, while remaining deeply respectful of the classical foundations of the art.
Philosophy
For Guru Shrimathi Sivanuja Balaji, classical dance is more than movement. It is a journey of the body, mind, and spirit, shaped by discipline, devotion, and creativity. Her approach is rooted in respecting the depth of Indian classical traditions while allowing each artist to develop through sincere learning and artistic exploration.
The Kalakshetra Bani forms an important foundation of her artistic identity. As an alumna of the Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts, she carries forward its legacy of artistic discipline and classical excellence. Her advanced training under Padma Shri Adyar K. Lakshman and Smt. Krishnaveni Lakshman, along with her specialized study of the Karanas under Padma Bhushan Dr. Padma Subramaniam, has shaped her understanding of movement, precision, and classical vocabulary.
Her philosophy also embraces the relationship between dance and music. Her grounding in Carnatic music, nurtured by Vairamangalam Shri Lakshmi Narayanan, contributes to a holistic and rhythmically nuanced approach to both performance and dance education.
